Dutch OpenStreetMap blog

Since OpenStreetMap received a EUR 12.000 funding from Digitale Pioniers, the Dutch branch has really taken off. I’ve been pretty busy with the promotional side of it, including setting up an http://www.openstreetmap.nl weblog (in Dutch).

FWIW: I tried out WordPress, because of the GeoPress plugin, but I could not get used to WP. So obviously I quickly switched to my blogging platform of choice: Serendipity :)
My geotag plugin works great with OSM btw.

Serendipity 1.0 released!

I was away on holiday, so perhaps I am a little late, but Serendipity 1.0 final is out!

“The Serendipity Team is proud to announce the final release version of Serendipity 1.0, an advanced and flexible blogging/cms web application. With its comprehensive feature set, including multiple authors, internationalization, templated output, and an open plugin architecture, Serendipity’s stable 1.0 release is ready to become the most popular Web application in the world!”

Upgrading (and installing) is easy as 1-2-3 :) Give it a try.

Serendipity geotag plugin updated to GMap2

Silly me, thinking that Google turned evil.

I have updated the Serendipity geotag plugin to Google Maps Version 2. Duh.
It should show up in Spartacus as version 1.13. Don’t forget to update Spartacus first, due to CVS URL changes made by the Sourceforge team.

Serendipity 1.0-beta3 upgrade

Upgraded to Serendipity 1.0-beta3. It’s a breeze, just copy the new files over the old ones. Start the browser-based upgrade script and consider it done. That’s how it should work, and that is how Serendipity works.

Of course, make a backup of your files and database, because you never know ;)

btw: Serendipity 1.0 should be here Real Soon Now, only waiting for some logo issues (hence the stable beta).

Theme Contest for Serendipity 1.0

Serendipity is one of the best weblog software packages out there. The 1.0 release is nigh. The software is ready for 1.0, but we want to release a nice new default theme to go with it.

Time for a theme contest!

Geolocated blogging, using a hosted service

The people from mediagonal have set up a blog hosting service focused on geotagging posts. It is based on the best blog software around: Serendipity. The geotagging is comparable with my geotag plugin, but I must say that the Flash interface integrating Google, MSN & Yahoo! is pretty nice!

travelblog.ch is online. It’s a public beta, so there are quite a lot of pretty rough edges, but you might see the potential already.

Have a look!

Blog product popularity according to del.icio.us

I was wondering how popular Serendipity is compared to other weblog products. I first looked at the big list in Google Directory. This gives s9y a 10th place.

I wasn’t convinced by the importance of this list, so I started out bookmarking the ones with the highest pageranks in del.icio.us. From my del.icio.us page I made the following table, sorted by occurence count:

product
name
del.icio.us
count
tag
‘blog’
count
tag
‘cms’
count
WordPress 2071 852 345
Drupal 1095 132 616
Blogger 1065 428 0
Textpattern 507 123 249
Movable Type 369 145 67
Blosxom 289 129 30
b2evolution 233 102 33
Serendipity 228 101 51
pMachine 190 49 90
Pivot 148 47 45
Roller 101 50 12
Geeklog 109 35 37
BBlog 84 36 9
Radio UserLand 60 18 4
PHP-Nuke 59 2 2
Slashcode 51 6 17
CommunityServer 43 15 0
City Desk 28 0 17
Das Blog 23 12 0

In this list, s9y has an 8th place by occurence count. When you take the tag count for ‘blog’ and ‘cms’ into account, you could argue that e.g. Drupal is more CMS software than blog software. Serendipity then gets an almost shared 5th place.
Not bad, coming from 10th place in Google Directory :)

On a side note: There are quite a lot of web CMS and blog products in an identity crises (‘What are we? Blog or CMS?’). Using folksonomy and the del.icio.us userbase, a conclusion can be made.
The occurence count is of course determined by the number of del.icio.us users. For this topic that’s okay, because they usually are into blogging and the likes. For other topics I’m not yet sure of the real value.

I’ve added CommunityServer, CityDesk and Das Blog after reading Chris Garret’s “Blog Software Reviews at a Glance”. Drop me a line in case I’ve missed more.

Professional Blog Software Reviews

Chris Garret writes interesting in-depth reviews of weblog software: “Over this series I will look at the various blogging systems available on the market. While there are no doubt any number of blog software reviews you could read, my focus will be on blogging software that will enable you to blog professionally and not just for fun.

Unfortunately, Serendipity (my blog software of choice) is not mentioned. Or is that because I blog for fun? :)

Serendipity developer!

As of this afternoon I am a Serendipity developer. More specifically, I have commit rights to the plugins and themes CVS. I guess I had too many commit requests ;)

Thanks Garv!
