‘Hyperlink’ realworld objects to Wikipedia

A little background. A datamatrix is a 2 dimensional barcode, that can hold up to 2kB of data. I created one at semacode.org, containing the URL to my blog.

You can make a photograph of this image using your mobile phone. If you have a datamatrix reader installed (install one over the air using your Java enabled mobile phone), it will translate the datamatrix into the URL. Obviously, this process only makes sense if you print the image first ;)

At Semapedia.org you can create a datamatrix (‘tag’) containing links to Wikipedia articles. Print the tag and attach it to e.g. the Guggenheim Museum, New York. Anybody that photographs the tag will see the wikipedia entry.

The community around Semapedia also photographs tags and its surroundings. There is a geotagged Flickr stream, a Google Map and an easy way to contribute.

Microsoft Live Labs Photosynth Technology Preview

From Microsoft Live Labs comes Photosynth:

Photosynth takes a large collection of photos of a place or object, analyzes them for similarities, and displays them in a reconstructed 3-Dimensional space. With Photosynth you can:

  • walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle;
  • seamlessly zoom in or out of a photograph even if it’s gigapixels in size;
  • see where pictures were taken in relation to one another;
  • find similar photos to the one you’re currently viewing;
  • explore a custom tour or see where you’ve been; or
  • send a collection to a friend.

    Can’t wait to see it in action!

    Art In Cities

    I made a photo of this drawing pasted on the wall out on the street. Googling for the artist, I came across Art In Cities. This site is a growing collection collection of photo’s of grafitti’s, stencils, stickers, etc. that are snapped on the street by people like you and me.

    Cities are like a huge art gallery with a permanently changing exhibition. Art is submitted everywhere and constantly. The art is not made by the direction of an institution or company, but are short personal notes, big fascinating projects or intriguing protests. With graffiti, posters, stickers, stencils, etc the individual artists use the city as an art gallery.

    They should be able to do some geotagging using a geocoder …

    OziPhotoTool 2.7 released

    OziPhotoTool version 2.7 dated 12 Nov 05 has recently been released. OziPhotoTool uses the date/time information in the EXIF Metadata of digital photos together with track files in OziExplorer format to geolocate the photos. Once the photo location has been determined OziPhotoTool can generate OziExplorer waypoint files, watermark the photos with location information, generate web pages, embed EXIF GPS tags, or generate Google Earth kml/kmz files.

    The latest version adds the ability to generate Google Earth kml/kmz files. This allows users to create stand alone files for sharing tracks and photo waypoints with other Google Earth users. Advanced users can create or edit kml generation templates to fully customize the kmz file generated.” — OziPhotoTool

    The full version (i.e. process more than 5 photo’s) will set you back $25 with lifetime upgrades. Not bad.
